     This Torah reading’s focus is the appearance of angels to man as messengers of God and God’s interaction with man through promises, miracles, provision, prophecy and revelation.

     The Torah portion this week is titled “Vayera #7200” and means in Hebrew, “and appeared.” 


     The Torah portion is in Genesis 18:1-22:24

Genesis 18:1, records God reaffirming His covenant with Abraham and Sarah concerning their promised child, who would be named Isaac.

Genesis 18:16, records Abraham interceding for Sodom.

Genesis 19:1, records Sodom’s depravity.

Genesis 19:12, records Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed.

Genesis 19:30, records the descendants of Lot.

Genesis 20:1, records the trouble between Abraham and Abimelech, king of Gerar.

Genesis 21:1, records the birth of Isaac.

Genesis 21:8, records the banishment of Hager and Ishmael.

Genesis 21:22, records a covenant with Abimelech.

Genesis 22:1, records the testing of Abraham’s faith on Mount Mariah.

Vayera “and appeared”

Torah Portion

2 Kings 4:1-37


     Genesis 18:1 (Interlinear Bible) reads, “And appeared “Vayera” Jehovah to him by the oaks of Mamre.”

    “Vayera” in Hebrew is two words. “Vay” means “and,” “raah #7200”and means “appear, see, looks, even provide.”

     In Genesis 18:2, Abraham looks and beholds three men standing by him, having miraculously appeared it seems. Then, in Genesis 18:13 it’s plain that one of the three is God Himself. This is the fifth time God appeared “raah” to Abraham. The first time was at Shechem when Abram built an altar there (Genesis 12:7). The second time was after Abram and Lot separated their herds and flocks (Genesis 13:14-17), the third time was after Abram rescued Lot from the Kings of Mesopotamia (Genesis 15:1-21). The fourth time was when the Lord reaffirmed covenant with Abraham, then established circumcision (Genesis 17:1-22).

     Have any of you reading this ever seen or heard of angels? Or maybe the voice of the Lord in any form? A lot of people think they would like to hear the voice of the Lord or see an angel, but if you really think about it, this should scare the pants off you, because from that moment on your life would be greatly changed, even forever. This I assuredly know.

     In Genesis 18:1-15, the Lord appeared to Abraham and Sarah, reaffirming His covenant with them (that’s God’s promise). The rest of the chapter is about Abraham interceding with the Lord on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah (That’s protection from an intermediary).

     Genesis 19 records Sodom’s depravity and the Angels of the Lord appearing to Lot and his family, warning them to leave the city (that’s God’s protection). Then the cities are destroyed. Geologists would like to tell you that the whole valley where Sodom and Gomorrah used to be was created by volcanic eruption, but it looks more like the land itself vomited them out as God rained fire and brimstone down from heaven.

     Genesis 20:1, the Lord comes to Abimelech in a dream, warning him concerning Sarah. Afterwards, Abimelech restores Sarah back to Abraham (that’s God’s protection).

     Genesis 21, records the Lord visiting Sarah, Isaac’s birth, and an angel saving Hagar and Ishmael. Genesis 21:17 reads, “And God heard the voice of the lad.” That verse implies that God heard Ishmael praying, then He saves them in the desert by showing Hagar a well and telling her He would make a great nation of Ishmael. (That’s God’s supernatural provision, protection and promise).

     And in Chapter 22, the Lord tests Abraham by telling him to take his son Isaac to the top of Mount Moriah and sacrifice him there.

Genesis 22:11-14 reads, “But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ So he said, ‘here I am.’ And He said, ‘do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now, I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.’ Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place, the Lord will provide; as it is said to this day, “in the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

     Genesis 22:14 (Interlinear Bible) reads, “and Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah will See; so that it is said until this day, in the mount of Jehovah it will be seen.

Jehovah Jireh, Yahweh Yerah or the Lord Provides, and even God Sees can be translated from the same root word in our Torah study today “raah #7200.”

     The name “Yahweh Yerah” is one of the many compound names or titles for one of our God’s characteristics. Most of these names arise out of some historic incident or highlight some benevolent attribute of God when taking care of His children’s needs such as food, water, shelter, clothing, protection, deliverance and even love or comfort.

     The historic event where we learn this title for God, “Yahweh Yerah” comes from Genesis 22 where we find Abraham faced with the last and greatest challenge of his life.

     The Lord had called Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his child of promise, his covenant child; the foundation of all the other promises. I can’t imagine what went through Abraham’s mind, or the faith and will it took to carry out that commandment from God. People, this is what I was saying about hearing the voice of God. It would and should scare the pants off you. It would affect you to your very core, and change you for the rest of your life.

     Anyway, faithful Abraham packs up and heads for Mount Moriah with Isaac to make the sacrifice unto the Lord (the heathen and pagan sacrificed children to their abominable idols, but our God has never demanded such and the word used for Isaac in             Genesis 22:5 (interlinear Bible) is the Hebrew word “naar #5288,” meaning “young man”). Okay, no child sacrifice there.

Let’s look at the title YHVH Yerah.

     Jehovah, Yahweh, YHVH is Lord, God, Divinity and everything that entails.

     Yerah or raah #7200 is simply a verb meaning to see, seen, appear, appearing, provide or provides, but Yerah in conjunction with YHVH becomes divine. The reason being, with God, to see is also to foresee, as He is the one who possesses eternal knowledge.He knows the end from the beginning. (Isaiah 46:10)

     Another word for “seeing” in Greek is “#2334 theoreo” and can mean behold, observe and saw. In Latin the same word is “video” meaning seeing from afar or watch, thus with God Eternal, seeing is foreseeing. It is pre-vision. Seeing man’s sin and fall, and need of redemption, God makes provision. To God, pre-vision is followed by provision, to see the need beforehand and supply for that need. God sees our need before we ever do and provides for that need before we even know we need anything! Amen!

   So, Abraham and Isaac are on their way to Mount Moriah to make the sacrifice. The word “Moriah #4179” is also a kindred word with “raah #7200” from the same root as seen of, shown of, or provided of God (2 Chronicles 2:1). On their way to the sacrificial site, Mount Moriah, Isaac, curious, asks about the lamb for the burnt offering (Genesis 22:7b-8). 

     “Then he said, ‘look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ And Abraham said, ‘my son God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering.’ So the two of them went together.” Amen. Abraham’s faith in God must have been strong, not seeing a lamb or maybe knowing and believing God could raise Isaac from the dead, but still not knowing for certain, just trusting. It is not until Isaac is bound on the altar and the knife is about to plunge into Abraham’s only son, that the Angel of the Lord stays his hand! Wow! Amen, then they saw the ram in the thicket. Not until, sometimes, not until you are completely in God’s will does He show you His provision. Amen.

     This is the chief lesson we learn from the story and Isaac’s deliverance through the provision of a substitute. God provided then, and He would provide again in the future. Deliverance from death – the oil of joy for the ashes of sorrow and mourning – blessings for obedience. Thus, Isaac was exhibited as a type or pattern of one under judgment for sin. For Isaac was offered up and received back, and the lamb became his substitute.

Abraham then must have realized that the sacrifice of animals was only a shadow of something greater to come. Generations later the same place, Mount Moriah, meaning Provided of God, became the site of Calvary, and the scene of that grand and awful sacrifice of God’s only begotten Son, where He was put under judgment for our sin and became our lamb, our substitute, our unspotted, unblemished sacrifice, Yeshua Messiah.

     Our Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua, refers to His being this sacrifice in John 8:56. “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”

     Romans 8:32 reads, “He did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?”

     He is our great provider, Yahweh Yerah. “Vayera” and He appeared into all of our lives.

As Yahweh Yerah, He provides everything for us, everything! Even unto the salvation of our souls and our place of rest in Him eternally. That’s promise, that’s protection, that’s provision!


Haftarah Portion

2 Kings 4:1-37

     2 Kings 4:1-7 reads, “A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, ‘your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.’ So Elisha said to her, ‘what shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?’ And she said, ‘your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.’ Then he said, ‘go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors – empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.’ So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, ‘bring me another vessel.’ And he said to her, ‘there is not another vessel.’ So the oil ceased. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, ‘go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.’” Amen.

     We see here God interceding and making provision for the woman and her sons through a mediator, the prophet Elisha. God not only met her immediate needs, he also provided for their long-range needs.

     In the next story, 2 Kings 4:8-37, God, through Elisha, honors a faithful Shunamite woman by raising her son back to life, honoring covenant promise. In 2 Kings 4:38-41, God, through Elisha, purifies a pot of poisonous stew for his servants, thus protecting them.

     Then in 2 Kings 4:42-44, God, through Elisha, feeds 100 men with just 20 small loaves of first fruits barley bread and newly ripened grain. Second Kings 4:44 reads, “So he sat it before them; and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.” God, foreseeing all of their needs, provided an intermediary, Elisha, to supernaturally keep His promises, provide protection and provision. He is Yahweh Yerah, our Great Provider.


Gospel Portion

Luke 2:1-38


     In Luke 2:1-7, we see God’s plan for the redemption of mankind begin to unfold, the prophesied child being born, and God’s promise being fulfilled. Micah 5:2 reads, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, who’s goings forth are from old, from everlasting.”

    Luke 2:8-14, “Vayera” and appeared an angel to the shepherds in the night watch. Luke 2:10 (NKJV) reads, “then the angel said to them, ‘do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.’”

     Luke 2:15-20, the shepherds go to see the prophesied child. Verse 20 reads, “then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.” Isaiah 57:19 reads, “I create the fruit the of lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” says the Lord, “and I will heal him.” Amen.

      Luke 2:21-24, Christ is circumcised according to the requirements laid down in Genesis 17:12 and Leviticus 12:3. Luke 2:21 reads, “and when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.” That’s covenant promise.

     In Luke 2:25-35, Simon prophesies over the child of promise. Isaiah 8:14 reads, “He will be as a sanctuary, but a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” And Hosea 14:9 reads, “who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right the righteous walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them.”

     Luke 2:38 reads, “and coming in that instant she (Anna) gave thanks to the Lord and spoke of Him (Jesus) to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”

      Deuteronomy 18:15 reads, “the Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren and, Him you shall hear.”

     Vayera “and appeared” God to all these people through prophets and angels giving His holy promise, protection and provision, Yeshua Messiah, to us His greatest gift.

     Would you like to accept Yeshua, Jesus, as your Savior, embracing all of the promises of the Bible in your life, glory in His provision, and rest in His protection? Well, it’s as easy as A.B.C.

A. Admit you have sinned and ask forgiveness.

B. Believe Jesus died for that sin, then rose from the grave three days later.

C. Confess with your mouth Yeshua, Jesus is Lord and make Him King in your life.

     Romans 10:8-13 tells us what to do. Just pray something like this: “Father fill me with Your Spirit that I too can see when You “appear” to me through your Word, promises and provision. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
