God had a plan, that His chosen people would be witnesses to the unity of God in the midst of universal idolatry. Showing all the nations of the world the blessedness of serving the One True God

The Torah portion this week is titled “Chayei Sarah” and “Chayei #2416” in Hebrew means life” it is found in Genesis-25:18.

    

     Genesis 23:1-19 records Sarah’s death and burial.

     Genesis 24:1-66 records the ancient Hebrew process of gaining a wife for Isaac.

     Genesis 25:6 records Abraham taking Keturah as his wife.

     Genesis 25:7-11 records Abraham’s death and burial.

     Genesis 25:12-18 records the families of Ishmael.

“Chayei Sarah”

Torah Study

1 Kings 1:1-31

     

     This Torah study is titled “Chayei Sarah” in Hebrew means “Sarah’s life.”

Sarah’s life was that of a faithful God-fearing wife who stayed true to her husband and God. She abided in His promises through trials and tribulations that took a lifetime to come to pass. Sarah was 90 years old when she gave birth to Isaac, the child of promise.

      “Sarah” in Hebrew means “#8283 princess” and “Chayei” in Hebrew means “#2416 life.” I think the word Sarah should mean “patient,” Amen. Genesis 23 not only records Sarah’s death and burial, it also records a step-by-step description of the ancient bargaining process to buy her burial site.

     Ephron gave the price, then seemed to dismiss it, saying, “What is this between you and me?,” but Abraham weighed out the silver (Genesis 23:15-16). Abraham could have received the land as a gift or favor without cost, but by paying the agreed-upon price of 400 shekels, there could be no question of ownership at a future date because it was legally purchased in front of witnesses at the main gate of the city, where elders and scribes gathered daily to do business.

      Genesis 23:20 reads, “so the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place.” Abraham had to purchase not only the field and the cave, but also the trees in the field as was the custom then. This meant that he and his descendants were now responsible for the maintenance of the land and trees.

     Genesis 23:2 reads, “so Sarah died in Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.”

     Today, Hebron is under the control of the Palestinians in Judea, and is a desolate place consisting of mostly rocks, but in Abraham’s time Kirjath Arba #7153, an older name for Hebron #2275, was a bustling little city, Kir #7023 meaning “wall” and Arba #702 meeting “four.” It was a fortified and ancient city, maybe with four large walls, that was probably built by the Anakim before the conquest of the promised land by Joshua and the tribes of Israel. Kirjath Arba would have been a little city with all of the agriculture, fields, orchards and vineyards to support it.

     So, chapter 23 of Genesis is really a 4000-year-old bill of sale, a legal deed or title to the field of Ephron which is in Hebron. The cave where Sarah and Abraham were laid to rest is still there to this day. The land has been bought and paid for, even though it was given to Abraham for his descendants by God’s promise. Today, it is controlled by Muslims who restrict access of those they say are not the sons of Abraham. But this is Isaac’s inheritance, not Ishmael’s. Genesis 25:1- 6 tells of Abraham’s children and grandchildren through Keturah, then Genesis 25:5- 6 reads, “and Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had; and while he was still living he sent them eastward, away from Isaac his son to the country of the east.”

     Abraham gave them, the Arabs, their inheritance; the land to the east, Jordan, Edom and Moab, like their older brother Ishmael, not the land of Canaan. Genesis 17:20-21 reads, “and as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget 12 princes, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.”

     Abraham had two sons at first, one the child of promise and covenant(Isaac). The other(Ishmael) was not, despite this, he was not forsaken of God, because God gives them pretty much everything else. In Genesis 36 we learn that Esau (Ishmael’s grandson) was so rich that the land could not sustain all his animals and servants, so he had to move to the land of Edom, east, across the Jordan.

      So, were the Arabs cheated out of their inheritance? No, God said he would bless them and indeed He has! There are 21 sovereign Arab states and just a single Jewish state, and the combined land area of the Arab world is 650 times larger than Israel. To put Israel’s current land mass in context, it is about the same size as the American state of New Jersey or New Hampshire. By comparison, the Arab states are one and half million square miles larger than the whole United States and they control much of the world’s oil wealth, so no, the Arabs were not cheated when God’s chosen ones returned to their ancient, God-given, bought and paid for home, Israel.

     God chose a land, the busiest caravan crossroads in the world. God chose a people, a man and wife named Abraham and Sarah to start a nation. God had a plan, that His chosen people would be a witness to the unity of God amidst universal idolatry, to show all nations of the world the blessedness of serving the One True God. They were to receive, preserve and share the Scriptures (Torah, Bible) and be a human channel for the Messiah, the Savior of the world to come through. Wow, and Amen.              What does this mean to us?

      It means, man sinned, separating himself from God, yet God still wants to fellowship with us, so He implemented this plan that involved a man and wife, Abraham and Sarah, and a land, Israel, to bring about the salvation of the world. Amen.

      After the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. and the people were scattered across the globe, all the records, family history, land title and deeds, were burned up in the fires that destroyed the Temple and synagogues, all except this book, our Bible, the Jewish Torah, that records 4,000 years of human history from Adam to Jesus. And it records Yeshua’s promise to us, His heirs. It records in the book of Joshua (“the whole book!) the borders of the land God promised Israel, and it is so accurate that when you read the book of Joshua today, you can trace the borders of that land, river for river, seacoast for seacoast, city for city, valley for valley mountain for mountain on a modern map of Israel today. This is no fairytale, Israel’s inheritance is recorded, as is ours, in the Bible. Our inheritance that was bought and paid for. Think about it. Amen.

      I prophesy, and have no misgivings doing so, when you stand on Scripture, “the nation of Israel will one day soon occupy the whole land of their inheritance, not just the small portion they are dwelling on now” (Amos 9:15).


Haftarah Portion

1 Kings1:1-31


      1 Kings 1:5-6 reads, “Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exulted himself, saying ‘I will be king;’ and he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and 50 men to run before him. (And his father had not rebuked him at any time by saying, ‘why have you done so?’ He was also very good-looking. His mother having bore him after Absalom.)”

      Adonijah was the fourth son of David. David had nineteen sons by eight wives. Solomon was his seventh son by his fifth wife.        Adonijah “#138 Adonaiyyahu meaning my Lord is Yahweh” was the oldest of the surviving sons and might have assumed he was next in line to be king, but Solomon was already designated to be crowned King. Thus Adonijah exalted himself against God’s will. God chose Solomon because the Lord loved him, and that’s the only reason we are given. Second Samuel 12:24-25 reads, “Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon ‘#8010 Shelomoh from #7999 meaning too complete.’ Now the Lord loved him, and He sent word by the hand of Nathan the prophet: so he called his name Jedidiah ‘#3041 yeddeyah meaning beloved of Yah,’ because of the Lord.”

     Solomon was predestined to reign and build the temple on Mount Moriah, which David bought from Ararunah (Ornan the Jebusite) for 50 shekels of silver. Second Samuel 24:21 reads, “then Ararunah said, ‘why has the lord the king come to his servant?’ And David said ‘to buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be withdrawn from the people.’”

      So, in reality 2 Samuel 24:18-25 is a 3,000-year-old bill of sale! This clearly establishes the ownership and direct line of inheritance from David to Yeshua Messiah. This means Jesus legally owns the Temple Mount. No wonder the Muslims dispute the Bible, which proclaims Abraham as their forefather, whom they accept while rejecting most of the rest of the Bible, Really? You can’t have it both ways.


Gospel Portion

Matthew 2:1-38


      Matthew 2:1-6 reads, “now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him.’ When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. So they said to him, in Bethlehem Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: ‘but you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a Ruler who will shepherd My people Israel (Micah 5:2).’”

     One significant thing about this passage is that this 2000-year-old Scripture establishes Jesus`s birthright to the town of Bethlehem in the land of Judah, of the country of Israel, physically, historically and prophetically by the prophet Micah. (Micah 5:2-5)

      History tells us that King Herod was from Idumea, the Greek word for Edom. King Herod was an Edomite, meaning he was a descendent of Ishmael and not a legitimate heir to the throne of David, so, when wise men from the east, maybe even his own country, came with prophecy and signs of the rightful king of Israel, Herod was greatly upset, knowing his kingship was in danger of being taken from his offspring.

      Matthew 2:17-18 reads, “Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: ‘A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.’”

      Rachel weeping for her children? Why cite this passage? One, it is prophecy come true (Jeremiah 31:15) and two, it further establishes the birthright of Jesus, because Rachel was Jacob’s wife, Jacob was Isaac’s son, and Isaac was the son of Sarah and Abraham, and Abraham bought the cave of Machpelah from Ephron in the presence of the sons of Heth (Genesis 23:10) where Rachel was buried at Ephrath, which is Bethlehem and where Jacob set up a pillar (Genesis 35:20) which is still there to this day, meaning at the time of Christ, it had been there for approximately 2,000 years. Matthew 1:17 records 42 generations from Abraham to Yeshua. Wow and Amen! That’s 4,000 years of recorded family history! And we are part of that family!

      Ephesians 1:3-6 reads, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.”

      We are a chosen people, adopted, with an inheritance in Him in the land of promise, Israel, in the new Jerusalem, where we will rule and reign with Him for 1,000 years then forevermore (Revelation 20:6).

A. Admit, admit you have sinned and ask forgiveness.

B. Believe, believe Jesus died for that sin, then rose from the grave on the third day.

C. Confess, confess Yeshua as Messiah and make him Lord of your life.

      Read Romans 10:8-13 and pray, “Father, fill me with your spirit that I too could have eternal life in your presence. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
