     This Torah study titled “Vayetze” in Hebrew means, “and went out.” It teaches us that if you feel alone or abandoned, if you feel you have been sent out into a cold loveless world, you don’t have to stay there. You can cry out to Immanuel, God with us. Because God Himself has promised in Genesis 28:15 “behold I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

Jacob’s dream about Angels ascending and descending a ladder from heaven to earth confirms there is communication between the two realms. God greatly desires communication with us and our prayers are the method of those communications.

Vayetze “and he went”

        The Torah portion this week is titled “Vayetze #3318” and in Hebrew means “and went out,” is in Genesis 28:10-32:3

Genesis 28:10 records Jacob’s vow at Bethel.

Genesis 29:1 records Jacob meeting Rachel, then marrying Leah and Rachel.

Genesis 29:31 records the children of Jacob.

Genesis 30:1 records Jacob’s agreement with Laban.

Genesis 31:1 records Jacob fleeing from Laban and Laban pursues Jacob.

Genesis 31:43 records the covenant between Jacob and Laban.

Genesis 32:1 records Esau coming out to meet Jacob.

Vayetze “and he went”

Torah Study

Genesis 28:10-32:3

      Genesis 28:10 (Interlinear Bible) reads, “and Jacob went out from Beer Sheba and went toward Haran.” This is where we get the title for today’s Torah portion, “went out” in Hebrew is “Vayetze #3318.”

The word “Vayetze” is more of a phrase, “Va “meaning “and,” “yetze” meaning “went out or it can mean send as a command.” So we see from last week’s study that Jacob is sent. He is commanded to leave by his father and mother for various reasons, such as the bad blood between him and his brother Esau, but more so to find a wife with the right bloodline.

      Genesis 27:46 reads, “and Rebecca said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of the Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

      Genesis 28:1-2 reads, “then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: ‘you shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise go to Padan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.’”

      Jacob is sent from Beer Sheba (beer #875 meaning well and Sheba #7651 meaning seven) or place of seven wells to Haran #2771 meaning parched, dry or arid. So, Jacob is sent from a place of relative comfort and plenty to a place of unease and lack. It seems that in every life one has their own desert to wander and river to cross.


      Genesis 28:11-12 reads, “so he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set, and he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he laid down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth and its top reached the heavens; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.” Amen.

      The angels of God, “malaki #4397, in Hebrew meaning messengers or ambassadors,” were ascending and descending from Earth to heaven and from heaven to earth on a ladder. “Sullam #5551 in Hebrew meaning ladder, staircase and can mean ramp and in another form it can refer to a highway;” so what Jacobs sees would be hard to explain by our limited human experience.

      Jacob saw supernatural beings traveling back and forth from the heavens in a supernatural way, but what’s really important is that God is showing Jacob the multitudes of angels working on behalf of man. Amen. It could be that the angels ascend and other angels descend doing God’s will on earth for the benefit of man.

      Genesis 28:13-14 reads, “And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

      Here God reaffirms His covenant with Jacob, the everlasting covenant.

      Genesis 28:15 reads, “Behold I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” Amen.


      God shows Jacob that out of God’s great love, He has instructed multitudes of angels to work (battle) on man’s behalf, and out of His great love for mankind, He, the King of kings, Lord of lords, the Creator of the heavens and the earth says, “I will never leave you,” “I will not forsake you,” “I will be with you always.” People, that is such a comforting thought to me that I started looking for that promise in other books of the Bible. I found it dozens and dozens of times. I found that promise in every book of the Bible, both Old Testament and New Testament. “Behold I am with you,” “I will never forsake or leave you.”

      God wants to have a relationship with us so much that He even watches over us in our sleep. He is in our dreams and hears all our prayers and petitions. He sends His angels forth to minister to us (Hebrews 1:13-14).

      God spoke these promises to our forefathers, to us, and to you. Matthew 18:20 reads, “for where two or three are gathered together in My name I am with you.” I can’t think of a more comforting thought than knowing God is with us, and that He wants us to be with Him for all of eternity. “For where two or three are gathered in My NAME.” That name just happens to be one name of our Messiah, “Immanuel #6005 meaning God with us” (Isaiah 7:14), the one who hears our prayers because He, Immanuel, is ever standing before the throne as our intercessor, making petitions for us. Hebrews 7:25 reads, “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

      He is with us and He is here, in our Bibles. All you have to do is read one verse or one hundred today; it doesn’t matter, pray, read, then meditate on what you’ve read and I guarantee that the word of God will reveal something to you that is your very own. Immanuel, God with us, Jesus the word of God. With the word of God in us, we are never alone. Amen.

      Jacob then rose early, set up the stone he had laid his head upon, anointed it with oil and called that place “Bethel #1008 in Hebrew meaning house of God.” Jacob then made a vow saying, “if God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and all that You give me I will surely give a 10th to you” (Genesis 28:20-22). Remember when you “Vayetze” go out, know that you go with God.


Haftarah Portion

Hosea 12:12-14:9

      Hosea 12:12 reads, “Jacob fled the country of Syria; Israel served for a spouse, and for a wife he tended sheep.”

Once again Israel is reminded of the faithfulness of their forefathers, we see that during the years in which Jacob was in exile in Mesopotamia, he trusted in YHVH, even though Laban deceived him and caused him to work twice as long as he originally contracted for the wife he desired, and Laban changed his wages ten times; yet, the Lord still prospered Jacob. The Lord was with him always, when Jacob left Laban, Jacob was rich in wives, children, flocks and servants.

      Hosea 12:13 reads, “by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved.”

      In like manner, YHVH raised up Moses (a prophet) and brought the children of Israel out of bondage to Egypt and provided for them through the 40 years in the wilderness. God never left them, He was always with them, in the cloud by day and pillar of fire by night.

      When the children of Israel left Egypt after being in bondage for 430 years, the book of Exodus records that after being afflicted with 10 plagues the Egyptians urged the children of Israel to leave. Exodus 12:35- 36 tells how the Israelite's left Egypt with all the wealth of that nation. God never left them and then, in the end he gave them the riches of the known world.

      God has an inheritance for us also, the riches of the kingdom of heaven. God is faithful, He does not forget or forsake. Hosea 14:4-7 reads, “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, for My anger has turned away from him. I will be like dew to Israel; he shall grow like the Lily, and lengthen his roots like Lebanon. His branches shall spread; his beauty shall be like an olive tree, and his fragrance like Lebanon. Those who dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall be received like grain, and grow like a vine, their scent shall be like the wine of Lebanon.”Amen.

      God will never leave you nor forsake you. Especially when sent “Vayetze” for His purpose.


Gospel Portion

John 1:43-51

      John 1:43-44 reads, “The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him “follow Me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, we have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

      In reading the whole Gospel portion, just eight verses, “Nathanael” is mentioned five times. I thought the name must be significant, so I looked it up. “Nathanael #5417 in Hebrew means “given of God.”


      Jesus later characterizes all of His disciples by that term in John 17:6. “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have Given me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.” Amen.

      I pray also to be counted worthy to be “given of God” to Jesus. Amen.


      Back to John 1:47, “Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said to him ‘behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!’ Nathanael said to Him, ‘how do you know me?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.’ Nathanael answered and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered and said to him, “because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree,” do you believe? You will see greater things than these.’ And He said to him, ‘most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.’”

      While Nathanael was under the fig tree, whether he was dreaming, meditating or praying, he realized he had not been alone. Maybe Nathanael had been meditating on the dream Jacob had about the ladder and Jesus` supernatural knowledge of that convinced him that Jesus was the Son of God.

      Jacob’s dream about angels ascending and descending a ladder from heaven confirms that there is communication between heaven and earth. Communication is the key to any relationship, and God greatly desires to have a relationship with us.

      Our prayers are the communication we can have with God, our prayers open a way for God’s messengers (Malaki #4397 angels) to come and go between heaven and earth. So know this, “when we are Vayetze, sent out or go out, we are not alone. A great multitude of angels watches over us every day and night.”

      God has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” He has given us His Son, Immanuel (#6005 God with us) and the Holy Spirit, as our Comforter.

      I pray now that if this message has touched you, if you feel alone, abandoned or rejected, cry out to Jesus, Immanuel right now, Amen.


      I want to go to the ABCs of salvation with you now.

A. Admit, admit that you have sinned and ask forgiveness.

B. Believe, believe that Jesus died for that sin, then rose from the grave on the third day.

C. Confess, confess that Jesus is Lord and make Him King in your life.


      Matthew 10:32 reads, “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”

You can say a simple prayer like this. “Lord, I admit that I have sinned. Please forgive me, Lord. I believe Jesus died for that sin, then rose from the grave on the third day. Lord, I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and make Him King in my life. Lord, I pray now for You to fill me with your Spirit, that I may never be alone again. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
